Volo Natural Learning Community

Information for parents and families.

Thank you!

We share a love for learning and growing at every age. As early community members, our shared vision helps to form and guide Volo. Joining this small, vibrant community is exciting. We know that creating a school of the future tries our hearts and minds. Thank you for bringing your optimism and energy to Volo.

We welcome parents, older siblings, and grandparents who would like to Volunteer. We are currently looking for volunteers to help in the afternoons and on Fridays. We also welcome parents and families to participate in other ways.

Please see our Volunteer and Observation Guidelines.

Safety

We take safety seriously. At the same time, great learning activities are inherently risky. As a learning community, we need to share a commitment to the preparation and care that minimized unnecessary risk.

When with the Volo groups, we will all strive to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants. Accidents will happen. Volo faculty have spent many years leading groups indoors and outdoors and have an excellent safety record. Part of that excellent record comes from being serious about preparation and awareness. We strive to be prepared so that in case an emergency arises, we can all move quickly and effectively; this includes involving medical professionals quickly. Please take the time to read and discuss the Outdoor Safety Policy and share important information with staff through the Parental Consent and Release Form. Please do not hesitate to reach out to discuss any issues of health or well-being that you think might be important for your child. We must be informed of anything that could endanger the health or well-being of your child or anybody else in the group. And we must be able to get in touch with you quickly.

We have a smallgroup. Please keep your child home if they are contagious or even if they are just feeling too crummy to participate.

Community and Individual Well-Being

At the core of Volo is to “love the person.” Loving means to respect and treat with kindness, empathy, and compassion. We strive in all we do to act mercifully and kindly with ourselves and each other. We also care for and about the world around us.  To be well, we need to care for and nourish ourselves and others as whole human beings including mental, physical, and emotional dimensions.

For perspectives and guidelines on wellness, please see the Volo Natural Learning Community Handbook.

Volo is and will be a warm, welcoming, and safe environment emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Members of our community trust that we will be treated with respect and kindness. We respect our own perspectives and the perspectives of others in matters of faith. Bullying, violence, abuse, or disrespect of any kind is out of place. For reference to expectations in school settings, please see the Utah Safe School Policy

Donations

Volo is a non-profit, public charity. Donations to Volo are tax-deductible. We rely on generous donors to provide these critical services for young people. Money can’t buy everything. We won’t try to buy the most important things with money. But we do need money to keep top-notch education specialists involved for the many hours it takes to support young people and families. We need money for supplies and facilities. We need to provide top-quality equipment for cutting-edge education for the modern world. We need money to keep this organization running in a culture that is complex and where resources are expensive. We need money to get to great outdoor places and to stay there safely and productively. We also need money to defray the costs for those who need it, so that more young people can participate in Volo.

Volo also needs contributions of time and other resources. We are grateful for everything everyone gives to this cooperative endeavor.

We are sensitive to both the potential for conflicts of interests in contributing families who are also members of this learning community, and also to the potential for the appearance of undue influence. To avoid as much drama as possible, we have guidelines for contributions (linked below), and a more detailed donation policy that can be shared upon request.
