What sets Volo apart?

Three things make Volo different from other schools:

1. Nature as classroom, not just recess. Students spend 60% of their time outdoors, using real ecosystems to master math, science, and problem-solving. They measure stream flow for math, observe wildlife behavior for biology, and collaborate on actual riparian restoration projects. Nature isn't a field trip, it's where learning happens every day.

2. Truly personalized learning. With a maximum of 24 students and a current 5:1 student-to-teacher ratio, every child works at their own pace with individualized learning plans. Each student has a personal mentor who meets with them weekly to set goals and track progress. No ceilings, no floors, just forward momentum tailored to your child's unique strengths and interests.

3. Led by a PhD educator with proven methods as part of a vital learning community. Our programs blend the best of Montessori, Waldorf, and Nordic outdoor education, guided by educators with decades of international teaching experience. We use research-backed approaches from Finland's education system combined with hands-on learning in Utah's mountains.

The Luminary (full-time program): Currently, ages 7-12

The Quest (Friday program): Ages 7-12 generally

We focus on developmental readiness more than chronological age. If your child is curious, capable of outdoor learning in all weather, and ready for a mixed-age environment where they collaborate with both younger and older students, they're likely a good fit.

Contact us to discuss your specific child—we're happy to talk through whether Volo matches their learning needs and your family's goals.

Each day blends integrated learning for the whole child:

Morning (8:45 AM - 12:00 PM):

  • Morning Circle with music, announcements, and community building
  • Morning Math (focused skill-building through real-world applications)
  • Morning Language Arts (reading, writing, creative expression)
  • Seamless transition into Block activities (2-4 week thematic units on "big ideas")

Afternoon (12:00 PM - 3:00 PM):

  • Shared lunch and free play time
  • Arts & Projects: art, music, dance, project work, etc.
  • Reflection and closing
  • Optional "Workshop After 2:00" for extended learning (chess, science labs, special projects, goal work)

Much of our time is spent outdoors, typically at our Aspen Campus—a 40-acre mountain property in the Garff Ranches area. We travel there from our Park City Hub (indoor home base) for hands-on learning in streams, forests, and open spaces.

At Volo, students become confident problem-solvers, clear communicators, and passionate learners. They develop strong foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, and scientific thinking through meaningful, applied work rather than worksheets.

How learning happens:

At Volo, your child will learn concepts and skills in math, language arts, and science daily, integrated with music, art, and movement, as well as training and practice in future skills such as problem-solving, self-direction, collaboration, and leadership. We integrate subjects in our blocks (themed learning progressions focused on interesting big ideas) and our daily activities. Research shows an integrated curriculum strengthens critical thinking, helps students make connections between ideas, and prepares them for real-world problem-solving. Learning happens through movement and direct experience because the body and mind work together—embodied cognition research confirms that children learn math, science, and language more deeply when they can touch, build, move, and observe.

  • Math: We focus on concepts and skills, learning why not just how. Through riddles, challenges, games, demonstrations, direct instruction, and practice using resources like "Making Math Meaningful," students master concepts through real applications: measuring stream flow, calculating materials for building projects, analyzing patterns in nature.
  • Literacy: Reading and writing happen across contexts—nature journaling, creative storytelling, reports, poetry. Writing workshops serve both fun and practical purposes. For example, students led the creation of our regular newspaper. Students read for pleasure with time for silent reading, reading to others, and being read to.
  • Science: Direct observation, hypothesis testing, projects, and demonstrations replace worksheets. Students learn scientific thinking by doing science. We integrate the three dimensions of Next Generation Science Standards into daily practice.
  • Social Studies: Your child experiences life in a dynamic, respectful community. Activities include learning about history, cultures, and society. Place-based learning connects us to our position in history and culture.
  • Arts Integration: We engage art (painting, drawing, constructing), music, and movement every day. We also have focused weekly art, music, and dance periods.

How we assess growth:
We track development using student Showcase Portfolios, narrative evaluations twice yearly, Personalized Learning Plans with aspirational goals tracked weekly by mentors, and student self-assessments. Formative assessments in the form of observations, conversations, and targeted challenges are ongoing daily and lead our teachers to know your child's progress, needs, and strengths very well. We measure what matters: curiosity, capability, collaboration, and love of learning.

For families considering transitions:
Students develop strong foundational skills through meaningful, applied work. If your child transitions to another school, we provide the necessary records of their learning. What matters most isn't whether they've followed the same textbook sequence—it's that they know how to think, solve problems, and love learning. These capabilities transfer anywhere.

Yes! Colleges and universities—including Ivy League schools—actively seek students with diverse educational backgrounds and real-world experience.

For students who stay through high school age (14+):
We'll help you build a comprehensive "Admissions Portfolio" that translates Volo's learning into the language selective colleges understand. This includes:

  • Research papers and writing
  • Documented stewardship and leadership projects
  • Evidence of independent learning and creativity
  • SAT/ACT preparation if you choose to take those tests
  • Traditional transcript with mastery-based grading (we calculate GPA for college applications)
  • School Profile document that explains our educational approach to admissions officers

For students who transition to traditional high schools:
We provide transcripts and detailed records that demonstrate academic competency. Many selective colleges report that students who can show tangible skills and deep inquiry (via portfolios) stand out in a landscape of standardized metrics.

Current status:
We've been operating for two years, so our oldest students are still in elementary/middle school age. But our assessment system and high school pathway are designed specifically to ensure post graduation readiness, whether your child aims for university, trade school, apprenticeship, or entrepreneurship.

Students spend about much of their time outdoors year-round, in all seasons and weather conditions.

We follow the Nordic principle of friluftsliv (free-air life): there's no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. Rain, snow, and cold are opportunities to learn resilience, adaptability, and how to stay comfortable and capable in nature. These are precisely the kinds of real-world challenges that build confidence and competence.

When we're inside:
For truly dangerous weather (lightning storms, extreme cold warnings), we have our Park City Hub—an indoor home base where we can work on projects, do focused academics, and continue learning comfortably.

What to expect:
Your child will come home muddy, tired, and overflowing with stories about what they discovered, built, or figured out that day. We'll provide you with a recommended gear list to keep them warm, dry, and happy in any weather.

Most parents are surprised by how much their children love being outside in "bad" weather once they have the right gear and the right mindset.

Volo is based in Park City, Utah, with two primary locations:

Park City Hub (Indoor Home Base with indoor classrooms and a kitchen):
4554 Forestdale Drive, E26, Park City, UT 84098
This is where drop-off and pick-up happen daily (8:45-9:00 AM / 2:00-3:00 PM)

Aspen Campus (outdoor classrooms):
A 40-acre mountain property in the Garff Ranches area with streams, forests, meadows, and a small, one-room schoolhouse. This is where we spend most of our outdoor time. (Exact address shared with enrolled families for safety and privacy.)

Additional learning locations:

  • Swaner Nature Preserve
  • Jordan River Migratory Bird Reserve
  • Various protected open spaces in Summit and Wasatch Counties

Current enrollment: 9 students in The Luminary
Maximum capacity: 24 students total
Current student-to-teacher ratio: 5:1 (9 students, 2 teachers)

This intentionally small size ensures:

  • Every child is truly known by their teachers and has a weekly 1:1 mentor relationship
  • Personalized attention for individual learning needs and interests
  • Strong community bonds among students and families
  • Flexibility to follow student curiosity and adapt to emerging interests
  • Safe, manageable groups for outdoor adventures

Small by design, not by accident. We will never exceed 24 students because we believe deep relationships and individualized learning require this level of intimacy.

As we grow toward our maximum capacity, we'll add teaching staff to maintain our commitment to low ratios and personal mentorship.

2025-26 Tuition:

Why Volo is exceptional value:
Park City School District spends approximately $19,500 per student annually. Private schools in the area often exceed $20,000-$30,000 per year. At Volo, you receive PhD-level instruction, low (currently 5:1) student-to-teacher ratios, nature-immersed learning, and truly personalized education—at a fraction of the cost.

As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, every dollar of your tuition directly supports your child's education. We're not building profit margins—we're building capable, confident, creative learners.

Absolutely! Many families commute from surrounding areas.

Travel distances:

  • Park City: 10-15 minutes
  • Oakley: 20-30 minutes
  • Kamas/Francis: 20 minutes
  • Heber/Midway: 20 minutes
  • Salt Lake City, Millcreek: 30-35 minutes
  • Provo area: 45 minutes
  • Ogden area: 60 minutes

Some families coordinate carpools. Others use the commute as valuable transition time with their children—talking about what they're excited to do that day or reflecting on what they learned.

If you're considering a commute, we're happy to connect you with current families who travel from your area to hear about their experience.

Yes. Volo Natural Learning Community is a 501(c)3 public charity.

Being a nonprofit means:

  • Your tuition directly funds educational excellence, not shareholder profits
  • Charitable donations to Volo (beyond tuition) are tax-deductible
  • We're accountable to our mission and community, not to investors

Note on taxes: Tuition payments are not tax-deductible as they are considered payment for services (education). However, donations above and beyond tuition (such as gifts to our scholarship fund or capital improvements) are tax-deductible.

Volo is an excellent fit for families who:

  • Value curiosity over conformity and love of learning over test scores
  • Want their child to develop resilience through real challenges, not simulated ones
  • Chose Utah for outdoor lifestyle and want school to match that commitment
  • Believe children thrive when they're known deeply, not managed in large groups
  • Appreciate mixed-age learning where children mentor and learn from each other

Volo may not be right if you:

  • Need regular standardized test scores to feel confident in your child's progress
  • Prefer learning measured primarily through letter grades and class rankings
  • Want detailed comparison data showing how your child performs relative to peers
  • Prefer traditional classroom structure with desks, textbooks, and conventional scheduling
  • Need extensive indoor facilities, large-school amenities, or competitive team sports programs

Important to know about our current program:

  • Our learning happens primarily outdoors (60% of the time) and involves hiking mountain terrain in all weather
  • Students need to be able to stay with the group for safety reasons in outdoor environments
  • We maintain a 4.5:1 student-to-teacher ratio, which means we cannot provide 1:1 dedicated support (though families are welcome to provide their own aide)
  • Our small size and outdoor focus work best for children who can participate in group activities, respond to safety communications, and navigate our mountain campus
  • We are not currently equipped to support children whose needs require specialized behavioral interventions, extensive modifications, or constant individual supervision
